 Spotting a Crack
Author: altoclarinet25

Hi all,

I recently noticed a strange discoloration on my R13 going from the A tone hole up to the Buffet logo. It's lighter in color than the wood around it. There is nothing like it on the rest of the instrument or any of my other instruments.

Could this be the start of a crack? Are there pictures of cracks posted anywhere I could look at to make a comparison.

Thanks for any help!

A change in colour is just that - a change in colour. Grenadilla is variable in colour, though Buffet do stain their R13 clarinets to hide the differences so the wood looks uniform in colour. But if the stain has worn off in this area you will notice the subtle shades which is part of the natural beauty of grenadilla and nothing to worry about.

Cracks will appear as a hairline fissure on the surface and follow the grain. Usually on the top joint cracks happen in the area from the top tenon shoulder to the trill toneholes (and beyond, though most terminate in a tonehole or pillar hole and don't go right through to the bore), or in the case of the bottom joint they usually happen between the socket ring and the C tonehole.

A crack is either very obviously a crack, or it is very narrow but with significant depth, more than the fraction of a mm that is common with grain.

I don't associate discolouration with cracks.
