What is the best thing about playing a clarinet?
THE FEELING OF ACCOMPANIMENT
no one said it would be easy.

Hey, ya want all us rats to love ya? Fergit the silly notes. Play them squeaks and squeals!

The buzz of that low E!

The smiling expression necessary for the correct embouchure - we're all happy people.

The mournful sound of Tchaikovsky's 5th.

The pianissimo repeat of Mozart's Concerto, 2nd movement.

The smell of Mpingo.

The range of nearly 4 octaves which beats just about any other wind instrument.

It's like riding a bicycle . . . once you've learned how you can always go back and do it again. Like a bicycle, however, parts do get a little bit rusty. LOL

Besides a cool sounding word ...

Check under Equipment (I think) for a nice explanation of woods used for clarinets.

Being a guy, siting next to all of those cute "girl" clarinet players was a real perk--although sometimes,I wished I also played the flute as well...... :>}

Mpingo is the native denomination of the grenadilla tree.

Finally getting it right and having my pro tutor smile. Better yet, getting it right and having my wife happily sing or hum along with me as I play a pop tune.

And the tone, the tone, the tone. Nothing beats nailing it and hearing the sweet sound of a good clarinet. Even at a very low volume (ppp to pp level), a good clarinetist can carry the sound a very long way. I believe that even if the clarinet doesn't boom in popularity like the sax, it will continue to be wanted by the audience, no matter what the venue.

As someone who doubles on bass sax, one thing I like about the soprano clarinet is that it's portable! Four octaves in such a compact instrument -- I can carry a clarinet anywhere without needing an ox cart, and the clarinet doesn't take up half the floor space in my home office.

The huge, distinctive range of colors we can pull from that tiny little piece of wood.

Playing is a lot of fun, especially in a group. Playing the clarinet well can be a great stress-reducer!
