 Mouthpiece shopping
Author: marshall

Ok well...I took a trip down to Woodwind Brasswind on Friday to go mouthpiece shopping (as some of you may know from my last thread). I found a few mouthpieces that I really liked and I have some on hold...but their stock was lacking some handcrafted mouthpieces I wanted to try (Fobes CF, Gigliotti P, etc.) I plan on ordering some handcrafted mouthpieces from Weinermusic or another store on trial, and I was wondering if there are other handcrafters that I should look in to as well...along with models with the same general facing (long face with a close tip...one like the two mentioned earlier or a Vandoren M15...anything like that). Any help is greatly appreciated!

Fobes CF+ would be a great choice. Try ordering from Muncywinds. They generally have a good amount of stock on hand and know their products.

Genussa Excellente series on the Babbitt blank is a fine mouthpiece at an affordable price. I believe Ben Redwine also gives the option of Zinner blanks, if you happen to like that material. You can trial the Genussa through Weiner Music at a reasonable price.

I second grifffinity comment Genussa Excellenter are indeed very good mouthpieces. The different is that they are more full than the zinner based mouthpieces that have more covered sound.

I wouldn't bother with the Gigliotti. They aren't even remotely close to what they used to be (I play one!).

Check out the mouthpieces made by "Mike Lomax". You can go to his web site and see the different models that he has. A really good choice mouthpiece.

Someone should put in a plug for Walter Grabner, so that'll be me. His bass clarinet mpc is my primary, and his soprano is my secondary. Wonderful guy, extremelyl helpful, and comparatively affordable.

It's almost difficult to explain to a parent who just went to Sam Ash looking for a Fobes Nova why they haven't ever heard of it .......

Some things ya just can't get locally......

I've had personal experience with mouthpieces by Charles Bay, Greg Smith, Walter Grabner and Morrie Backun. Greg, Walter and Morrie are easy to contact and great to send out multiples to try. They all will work with you to make a good match with your equipment.

From what I've tried in my short clarinet lifetime thus far, the ones I remember using the most and longest were Richard Hawkins and Tom Ridenour (switching between them right now), previous to that I used a Greg Smith for a few years (all the while trying other stuff but always going back to the Greg Smith), and previous to that actually was a Gigliotti (slightly touched up by David Spiegelthal).

As far as gigliotti's go, I love the sound I get out of them (something about the way they're designed), but they just don't fit my embouchure anymore and I find them hard to control.
