Hi there!
I'm travelling to the Seattle area soon (from across the ocean). Any major shops/events that can be recommended? I'm interested in band/solo sheet music and the (contra)bass clarinets in particular, but not exclusively.
Thanks!

I live in the Seattle area, and music shops are a great disappointment here. There's one downtown called Capitol Music that's probably the best generic music store, with a fairly decent supply of sheet music. In Tacoma there's Ted Brown Music (affiliated with JW Pepper). I always use online resources for music and supplies.
Not too far away is Vancouver BC, about a 2 1/2 hour drive north of Seattle (depending on border conditions!), and of course the place to go there would be Backun Musical Services.
One event not to be missed by area clarinetists coming up two months from now is Clarinetissimo VII on Oct 6th, at Univ. of Washington School of Music in Seattle. Master classes by Sean Osborn, Chris Sereque, Jennifer Nelson, and recital by them of all British composers. See: http://www.osbornmusic.com/clarinettissimo.html

Capitol Music is supposed to move to a new location that I'm unaware of. In fact, it may not have opened yet in its new spot for all I know. The old building was torn down. I'd agree that it was rather disappointing when I last went. JW Pepper at Ted Brown Music in Tacoma was also a disappointment when I drove down there in June. As with Dave, I do my ordering of sheet music online as well. In Vancouver there is Long and McQuade or Tom Lee for sheet music. However, with the Canadian dollar being strong and the higher taxes there, you pay a lot more for the music.
Another clarinet event will be the weekend of October 13th. There will be a clarinet choir festival featuring groups from the Pacific Northwest and the Eastman School of Music. Jon Manasse will be here that same weekend to perform the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Seattle Symphony. I've postponed an international trip so I can be in town for the event.
I hope you have a great time visiting Seattle!
