It's difficult, but certainly not impossible, I'm crunching my way through it at present.

The Collins recording is excellent, and live, I didn't know that Zukovsky had recorded it...may have to get hold of that.

The Zukovsky recording is amazing. It should be illegal to have fingers that fast.

Zukovsky fast and wonderful tone quality: good genes, or is it that Ohler clarinet?

Hi,

I played the Corigliano several years ago with my school orchestra and then this past year for graduate auditions. In fact, I was very fortunate to have Corigliano coach me some during my preperation. I believe that this is one of his best pieces, and you would certainly have an enjoyable time learning it.

The place I suggest to get the Zukovsky Recording is either CDBABY.com or Itunes. It's paired with the Williams and Bartok Contrasts. We are on about 45 online sites (sony, tower, amazon, etc) but Cdbaby is where the stock is and it's *low*.

btw -

I produced it from a live (and old!) recording. It was the West Coast Premiere of it.

Bryan - that's insane!!

Very cool! I got the music score for it back in 1980 (Bernstein told me how to get it on approval from Schirmer which was only way to obtain it back then) and messed around with it. Was only a Junior in High School, but had a blast learning it.

Never was lucky enough to have a group who would touch it.

It was a great experience, and Corigliano was a joy to work with.

I'm reminded of a funny anecdote Charles Neidich told me:

A while back at Juilliard, there was a student playing the Corigliano for an audition. In the middle of the performance, Corigliano (who had been screening composition applicants down the hall) stuck his head in to listen. One of Neidich's collegues on the panel (who he did not name) asked Corigliano, "may I help you?" He told the panel member that he just wanted to listen. The panel member then asked, "why should you get to listen?" Corigliano replied, "well it's my piece of course."

The panel member was very embarrased that he didn't recognize him. He told Corigliano that no one was allowed to sit in on auditions, even fellow Juilliard faculty, and that's why he had behaved as he did.
