The Shackleton catalog just arrived from Gary van Cott, and it's amazing. It's a huge "coffee table" book with hundreds of color photos -- one instrument after another that you've never even heard of, let alone seen. $144.95 plus postage, and worth every penny.

Mine also arrived today from Gary. Beautiful book. I'm going to be studying this until the binding comes apart, I think.

Yes, incredible diversity in these instruments. Wish there were more than physical descriptions, not that that would be possible in a publication, and with a collection like this, but one wonders how all of those instruments played and what the effects of the various designs were.

I can't help but think that some serious improvements were made to some of these instruments that would be rather easily transferred to modern designs. For example, key rollers. I can't understand why these aren't available in the Big Four pro models. Or possibly a simpler, more-effective Bb/register key configuration than what's available today.

Of course, the death of the Mazzeo system points to things other than design that will kill an innovation, but breakthroughs may still come of only the tinkerers keep tinkering.

And how about that "slotted" clarinet! Wow.

B.

Ken - This book should be a library source as well as for personal collectors. Do we know of our US "major" woodwind libraries, Claremont-Fiske [Al Rice], Music Museum-USD [Debbi Reeves], Smithsonian, NYC Public, Lib. Cong. et al [music schools] plans to obtain copies ?? TKS for posts. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don -

The big music libraries you mention will certainly get copies. In fact, to get a US copyright, you are required by law to deposit a copy with the Library of Congress.

It's less certain that the smaller libraries will do so. I think most people interested in historical clarinets will order it, but the print run was only 500, so get it while you can.
