Poor picture and sound? That's okay. Good music, that's what this is. Thanks for the post.

Great Link!
Too bad the old Boston symphony video with Bernstein conducting Beethoven 6 in not on there any more. I could watch Harold Wright and Gigliotti play all day but that might not go over well at my job.

I just confirmed my fears! I thought (read: wanted to assume) that maybe bufclar was wrong...Does ANYONE happen to have that Beethoven 6 video?

That would be from the very late 70's - probably one of the last years that Ormandy conducted the Orchestra.
The comment on that webpage is wrong - Principal Oboe is Woodhams in that video. That's why I place it at very late 70's.
Probably a Z series Clarinet

I think I saved the Beethoven on my external hard disk at home. I will check later.

I saved the Beethoven but I must have done it wrong because it does not work. Wrights second movement in that performance was brilliant. The phraising was so convincing and effortless.
It's a shame it is gone.

I heard Ormandy and Philly in Atlanta in either 1979 or 1980. I think it might have been Ormandy's last year with them. I went to the concert not a huge fan of Gigliotti (from recordings), but after hearing him live, my opinion totally changed. What a sound...huge and dark and just amazing. They played Daphnis Suite #2, Beethoven 7, Mathis der Maler and a Bach Encore...one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen. I can still hear their sound...just incredible.

Gigliotti needed a powerful tone to cut through the famously plush Philadelphia strings, particularly in the famously dead acoustics of the Academy of Music. He said, not entirely in jest, that in the orchestra he had only three dynamics: Forte, Fortissimo and BTSOOI (Blow The S**t Out Of It).
His power came from very strong high harmonics, which don't record well, but sound metallic, particularly on LPs. When you heard him live, his sound was warm, lively and beautiful. He sounded dreadful on the Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet LPs, but gorgeous on the CD reissues on Boston Records.
Alan Hacker, by the way, is exactly the same -- far too bright on recording, but great in person.
