I had my wisdom teeth out exactly a week ago today, and I was wondering how much longer I should wait until I can play again. My private teacher said I should wait about two weeks, but my friends are traveling to Woodwind Brasswind in Southbend on Friday and invited me along (I'm looking into getting a new mouthpiece). Do you think this is a safe idea? or do I risk popping a stitch and bleeding in my instrument?
Thanks in advance!!

Nobody here can really give you an answer to this. When you've healed enough, you can play again. If you're not ready to play, you'll know because it will hurt.
Your health is more important than going and trying out mouthpieces. Just make sure you're completely ready to play.

What does your oral surgeon say?
Didn't you ask the Dr. at your post op when you could safely resume playing? That was the first thing I asked my Dr. at my post op visit.
I will say - it took a good two weeks for me to have any strength in my embouchure as I had all 4 teeth taken out at once - my two lower ones were impacted into my jaw.

I was in the same situation...all four were removed and the lower two were impacted.
The doctor didn't give any specific time...he said 'Anywhere between a week or two' or something along those lines.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed (all four were impacted), I was going to try to hold off for two weeks. However, I yawned at about day 4 and ripped out a stitch anyway, so I started playing the next day. My embouchure certainly wasn't where it had been though. If it were me, I wouldn't want to check out new mouthpieces until my embouchure was about the same as how I play on a normal day. Don't be too worried about ripping a stitch though...you'll survive!

Funny thing is...I posted a topic on this not too long ago!
I had all four of mine out...they were all impacted, but the bottom two hadn't grown roots yet and all four were really close to the surface (they just couldn't erupt because of lack of room). I was able to play again in about a week, but my embouchure strength wasn't there, it took about a week to get it back to where it typically was.
It really wasn't that bad...however, I would wait until you regain your embouchure strength before you try out mouthpieces, just to be safe.

I'm not too terribly worried about embechure strenth...I was playing for about seven hours a day before I had them out so I should be fine playing for an hour or two...I was just worried about popping a stitch and bleeding in my instrument and a mouthpiece that isn't mine (the latter of the two worried me more).
