 Landwell reed knife

Ok well as you may be able to tell by the subject, I'm going to be buying a reed knife in the near future. A friend of mine has been using her Landwell reed knife for a while with great satisfaction, and while looking at their hollow ground knife I noticed they have you specify 'hard', 'medium', and 'soft'. My question is, what is the difference between the three and how do they affect reed adjustments differently?

The soft, medium & hard refer the harness of the steel of the knife. The softer the steel, the easier the knife is to maintain, but will keep its edge for a relatively shorter period of time. Their Hard knife is about rockwell 63, which means it will hold an edge longer, but it will take considerably more work to acheive that edge.

Most double reeders use the medium knife, which is about rockwell 60-61. It is their most popular model. Clarinetists don't use the knife nearly as much, though, so a hard might suit you better in the long run.

If possible, ask your friend if you can try her knife/knives first.

FWIW, I have a medium which I have used for quite a few years and like it very much. I think it is one of the best knives that I have used.
