 Le Coq D'Or Misprint
Author: JoueJolie

Hey Everyone,

My friends and I are having a discussion on the very end of the Le Coq D'Or excerpt, the part directly after the long cadenza. The first measure starts on a written C and the second measure starts on a written F. We have been told by one of our teachers that the second measure should be a written Eb. The argument for the Eb is that the entire passage is based on a fully diminished chord so it makes sense to go from C to Eb. However, the score we have shows it starting on an F.

Anyone have insight on this?

Thanks!

Check out Peter Hadcock's book. The Working Clarinetist. He has a section on this. Page 104

Your teacher is incorrect. Tell him to consult the original part. [wink]

In measure 18, the first beat starts on C and the third beat starts on F, descending chromatically.

Both the Bonade and McGinnis (International) books are incorrect, starting the passage on beat 3 on an Eb.

It should be a whole step higher.

This is yet another example which shows the importance in using the original parts and not getting locked into excerpt book errors, of which the Bonade and McGinnis have many ...GBK

I looked into this a few years ago, with two scores: one for the opera and one for the "Suite" from the opera. As I recall, this half-bar was different in the two scores, one starting on F and the other on Eb. I guessed that the part was changed in the Suite to accommodate a cut, with different material (in a different key) following the clarinet solo.

Of course, one of the scores, or my memory, could be horribly mistaken.
