Un Seul by Kalmen Opperman - Recordings?
Author: Clariphant in Bb

Are there any recordings of this short piece for solo clarinet or bass clarinet by Opperman? The sheet music is available by itself and is also in the Stolzman songbook. Funny, it's written for Stoltzman, I believe, but I can't even find him playing it anywhere...

Hello,

As of now, there are no commercially available recordings of Un Seul available.

I have a recording of myself playing it at the 2005 Clarinet Festival in Japan, and also a recording of myself performing the New York Premier.

I worked extensively with Mr. Opperman on preparing this piece for those performances. If you would like a copy of it, I'll figure a way for you to hear it.

I think it is a simply beautiful and emotional piece.

Thanks,
Tom

Wow, I've always wondered about that piece. I've never seen the sheet music, but it's supposed to be amazing!

I would LOVE to hear a recording of it too.

Tom, is there any way the rest of us could hear it too?

Here is a link to a recording of my live performance of Kalmen Opperman's "Un Seul" at the 2005 International Clarinet Festival in Japan.

I hope you enjoy the performance and the piece.

Hi Tom, thanks for the links.

I also really enjoyed your performance of the Piazzola 'Histoire du Tango," which I have an arrangement of for flute & guitar. Very nicely done! Who was the guitarist? Did you simply transpose the flute arrangement, or is there one out there for clarinet as well?

thanks again, very illuminating!

Doug,

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the performances.

The Piazzolla you heard is the 1st movement from "Histoire du Tango" from a live concert in 2005 in NYC. I made an arrangement for clarinet & guitar based on the original flute & guitar version ( I made some changes in octaves to allow for the use of the low notes on the clarinet, some articulation changes, etc...).

The guitarist is Vilian Ivantchev. FYI: We just finished recording the Piazzolla, as well as many other pieces, for a commercial CD release in the fall.

Thanks.

Wondered if you could give some advice on articulation from letter D to F.
Legato tongue or all slurred? and the final high F#. Long fingering? Thanks!

RE: Opperman "Un Seul"

Articulation from letter D to F:
Very light legato articulation; seamless and elegant.

Final F#:
I use the long F# to better control a long diminuendo.
