 tonsillectomy
Author: Becky

About 3 weeks ago I had my tonsils removed. I did not think it would hinder my clarinet playing after it was all healed. But it has. I have an undertone or grunting noise when I play now. I can feel that my throat is different and I can't make it do everything I want it to. Any suggestions or people who have gone through this? I'm really struggling. With my senior year almost upon me, and many college auditions and competitions to go through, this isn't a good time for this to happen! :o)

Becky, I think if you give it some more time everything
will be fine with your throat. 3 weeks is not very long when
you're dealing with the body. Look at it this way, you had
to have the procedure, so it isn't like you did something
cosmetic that you now regret. A tonsillectomy may be "routine" but it is still major surgery. With more time, the only thing you should notice is that you'll feel better overall. Michael

The same thing happened to me when I had my "wisdom" teeth removed--air leaks, sluggish articulations, etc. It took about two months, but my old control finally came back. So, have faith. Give your throat a chance to fully heal and gently ease back into playing your clarinet. Don't expect too much too soon--everything will eventually return to normal. If you keep preparing through consistant and carefull practice, your auditions will be fine. Good luck!!!

Becky - as a fellow veteran of the gruesome operation of the tonsillectomy, I fully agree with the above. Just take your time and if you are like me, your clarinet playing will actually improve. Your infected tonsils were just in the way, probably making you feel generally run down as well.

Have faith - you'll be fine!
Robin
