 Bass Clarinet Mouthpieces

I am looking for a nice, open, free-blowing mouthpiece for my bass clarinet. Something that would help jazz it up a bit. Any suggestions?

Dave McClune model S2 might do the trick. Or try Clark Fobes.

Check out Walter Grabner's CX_BB_90 - http://www.clarinetxpress.com/bass.html

I haven't tried that one, but his CXZ_LB is excellent and he's great to work with.

Maybe someone esle can chime in on the specific quality of the CX_BB_90.

I just started using a Vandoren B46 which is quite open and allows me to play jazz to my liking. I have heard great things about Grabners bass mouthpieces but have not tried them.

I'll endorse the Grabner too. Have used Selmer C*, Van Doren (various), and Bay mouthpieces in the past and this Grabner is definitely the best in all ranges of the instrument. Am especially impressed at the quality of high notes with this mouthpiece. My colleagues in various groups have been impressed with its sound too.

I do play classical not jazz, however.

I know I should try-out more bass cl mps, but I'm very pleased with the 2 [yes, two] old glass GG [Pomarico] mps, skillfully refaced by Dave Spieg., ?nearly? the same, which make my Sel-Paris speak well, softly AND loudly. We are indeed fortunate in having so many fine mp makers/refacers. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

My Grabner CX_BB_90 is great. But the Backun BC + I recently purchased is superior for me, however it sells for approximately 3X the price of the Grabner!

I would highly recommend Clark Fobes mouthpieces. He makes a variety of facings of bass mouthpieces, so you can see what works best for you. They are great mouthpieces, very responsive, great tone and very reed friendly.

There have been lots of postings regarding bass clarinet mouthpieces and everytime, Walter Grabners name comes up. I play his old CXBS model made from a Selmer C* stock mpc and love it. However, that model has been discontinued and replaced by the CXLB (for Chicago Symphony Orchestra bass clarinetist Lawrie Bloom) fashioned from the ever-popular Zinner blank (seems like everyone uses them). Walter does make a model intended specifically for those interested in jazz and it would definately be worth a try.

I use a Grabner LB for all of my jazz and classical playing. It's superb! One thing to note.... I have 2 LB mouthpieces and they have different performance characteristics. If one is going to order a mouthpiece from Walter it's important to tell him what what you're looking for. Then, he can pick one or make one that most closely matches your tonal conception.
