 Krommer Double Concerto
Author: Old Geezer
Date:   2007-07-06 18:54

Just bought the CD of Julian and Simone doing the Krommer Double Clarinet Concerto...it's terrific!

Oddly the album liner doesn't say a word about who Julian and Sabine might be. Of course we all know who they are but still....

They're photographed with their clarinets; Juian seems to using one with a Bakun bell and gold plated keyes! Simon has her usual German system.

Their solo performance of the two Spohr concertos provides a good opportunity to evaluate the vaunted German clarinet tone.
Julian's beguiling colorful sound puts the German tone where it always is...in the shade! Just personal taste, I suppose. Still it's a must have CD for every clarinetist.

My favorite version is by Tony Pay and Thomas Friedli. It appears to be out of print in the US but is available at Amazon Canada and Amazon UK.

"Still it's a must have CD for every clarinetist"

I'm not really a big fan of Sabine's playing. She is a great player but not my cup of tea.

You guys are great fans of spelling...how do you spell pedant?

How anyone can prefer a version of the double concerto to this one without hearing it is not clear; it was just released last Monday in the UK only. Tony Pay is a very fine fellow, but to compare his playing to SABINE'S is not fair to him. She's a historically great clarinetist!

Julian is going to be historically great too, he seems to be improving all the time.

Spring for a copy of the CD and enjoy.

Old Geezer all of the players in Ensemble Sabine Meyer are better than she is and even her brother is better clarinetist and all around musician. This doesn't mean that she is not good. She is good but also popular that make up for that she isn't superb.

Iceland Clarinet says: "..... all of the players in Ensemble Sabine Meyer are better than she is and even her brother is better clarinetist and all around musician."

I can't let that one go unchallenged. Having heard the "Trio di Clarone" (Ensemble Sabine Meyer?) live at the Library of Congress I can unequivocally opine that while all three are exceptional players, Sabine is in a class by herself! Although I'm not a huge fan of German clarinet playing per se, I think the quality of Sabine's playing plus her musical personality far transcend the --often--woodenness of the German system clarinet.

Stefan, buddy, I don't know where you formed your IMO prejudiced opinion, but I can't find any basis for it in the real World!

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, I love that recording...however, I think Julian and Sabine have recorded the other Krommer Double Concerto op91. At least that's what it sounded like listening to the excerpt on You-Tube.

To me she is a superb player. Not always my complete ideal, but it is very hard to fault any technical aspect of her playing. Iceland Clarinet I would be interested to hear your perspective on what or who is a superb player.

Chris.

Sabine is a fine player as well as Julian. This is a great Cd, whether or not it is the best I don't know. However, it is defiently worth the $10.

Sabine Meyer is not my favorite player, but that has more to do with the fact that she does play a different system. She is clearly a fine musician, equally comfortable in solo, chamber, and orchestral situations. Some may not like her performances or recordings but can never actually point to specific reasons why. Over here, it's all just dumb clarinety things like preference of tone and whatnot. She has clear mstery of her instrument and plenty of musicality to back it up.

Old Geezer and I have not seen eye to eye on everything here on the BBoard, but all he did was come on and recommend a great CD. I don't even like Bliss for reasons of personal preference, but the clips on YouTube are enough to tell me that the recordings will be excellent.

My feeling is that there would be more for me to learn and experience from these recordings, precisely because it's not my ideal sound for the entirety of the disk. I'll be able to listen to what they're actually doing, rather than checking sound every measure.

Yes it is the Op.91 played with some panache...it also includes the Spohr Concertos 2 and 4.

Go and buy a copy of Tony Pay's Mozart Concerto with the Academy of Ancient Music, it will probably cause you to revise your opinion. It's world class, played on something that more resembles a clothes peg than a modern clarinet.

Grrrr, the Meyer/Bliss disc isn't available from the UK iTunes store yet. I keep meaning to buy it next time I'm in a CD store!

For the same reason I visit bookstores or look for printed excerpts online - I don't have enough money to screw around and waste it on trash.

Though in this case the CD doesn't happen to be trash, since I'm able to preview it and make my own determination. Just like I did when there were "record stores" around with intelligent people running them.

Where have you been the last 50 years?

Danny, it should be soon there.

D.L. - I agree that a hard copy is a great thing, but there just aren't Tower Record Stores on every corner just waiting with full Classical Sections to browse and ponder.

Hmm, come to think of it, Tower is Closed ......

It's actually a better deal for the Artist to do the Digital Sales also. The Artists that I'm working with are making up to 20 TIMES more digitally with my stuff than they were making with Labels such as Summit.

Think about that, 20 TIMES more. What used to be a $50 check is now $1000.

What's nice about this Digital Release is that there is a Digital Booklet that has all of the Liner Notes. Many Digital recordings don't have that.

There was already a large sampling (video and audio) on Youtulbe of the dynamic clarinet duo playing excerpts from the CD.

How any clarinet lover can resist having this almost historic CD of the leading clarinet soloist of the age paired with the one to come, is not exactly clear.

Loosen up guys and enjoy your days...not everyone lives to be an Old Geezer!

How old is Julian? WOW! His technique is flawless and his tone, IMHO, is wonderful. He might ultimately become the best ever!

I'm a huge fan of Sabine's playing although as a warning, the tone she has while playing Sphor 4 on this album is not her best. Her reed seems very soft.... I think her finest tone is on the debussy/mozart/takmitsu album, It's really incredible! but you really need good speakers/phones to appreciate it.
