Author: Russell W.

Hello! I am having a tough time choosing a solo to play for next years UIL Contest. I am starting early. Right now I am looking a two solos, Brahms Sonata 1, and C. Stamitz Concerto Nrm. 3. I like both of these solos but I want to play more before I come to a final decision. I want to know what your favorite solos are, and some good recommendations. I think all of you will be of help!! Thanks!!

I played the Weber Concertino for MTNA last spring and loved it! Even if you make a mistake the whole piece is so flashy that you will still make a good impresion.I would have to say likewise for the Weber Concerto.I heard a friend of mine play i think it was Weber's Themes and Variations? Whatever it was,it was one of the coolest sounding classical pieces i have heard.

My all-time favorite is the Mozart Concerto- but the Weber's are cool too

One of my all time favorites (besides anything by Poulenc, clarinet or otherwise) is the Rosza Sonatine. In the early going of practice it doesn't sound too good, but as you get it up to speed the variations start to sound like variations. Modern without being too outre' .

Out of the two you listed, I like the Stamitz. But I don't like Brahms all that much anyways, so I'm kinda biased. I like Weber's second concerto, especially the third movement. Some spots will take a long time to work, though, like the end of the third movement.

It's hard to advise what pieces you should play because I haven't got much idea of your level. Have you heard or played the brahms 2nd sonata? It's beautiful especially the 1st movement. The Weber 1st concerto always makes a good impression (actually I think anything by weber does.)
I also love Crussel's 3rd concerto. But my all time favourite at the moment is the Finzi concerto :)
