I'm trialing several lengths of Fobes barrels at the moment, and I think I have decided on one that I want to keep. It, of course, is wooden, but the rest of my clarinet is not (it's Greenline). I see that Mr. Fobes has posted multiple times on this BBoard that he does not believe in oiling to prevent cracking. Instead, he reccomends humidifying the instrument. I do own two Humistats, but I'm wondering if it's safe to put them in my clarinet case just for this one barrel. Will it cause mold or other problems with the non-porous (I think) Greenline instrument? For the record, I would attempt to maintain a humidity of around 50%. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your responses!

Thanks!
It's not super urgent, as the humidity tends to be high enough in the summer in my area (never goes below 40-45). I'm more concerned for winter months.

If you are concerned about how the humistat will affect the Buffet Greenline, might it not be a good idea to get the skinny directly from Buffet in Jacksonville?

Yes, I'm in PA (Harrisburg area). I'm not planning on subjecting my instrument to extreme cold or anything like that, but it tends to get dry in the winter, especially with heating.

Here's my two cents — in the winter, keep your practice room humidified instead of your case. Good for your clarinet, good for your furniture, and good for you.

I'm in roughly the same atmosphere as you are in Harrisburg (I play with their Orchestra from time to time also) and yes, it does get pretty dry. As Kilo wrote, humidify the room and the Clarinets will be taken care of. Even if it's just your barrel that needs it (as well as yourself).
Though when I travel to a gig I always use a Humidifier during the Winter.
