Slightly off topic, but does anyone know off hand which batteries go in the Yamaha silent brass? It's the trombone kit I am talking about - although I believe it is standard for the electronics part.

You got lucky, cause I'm a woodwind and brass player using a Silent Brass SB9-7 system (trumpet pick up mute PM7) connected to a Yamaha Personal Studio ST9 (the so called electronic part). Due to the Owner's Manual a single 6F22/6LR61 9 volt battery is used to power the ST9. Don't forget to switch the power OFF before replacing the battery. You can use the personal studio for all models of Yamaha pick up mutes.
Yamaha market two models of personal studio for their pick up mutes. The one I mentioned above is the smaller one and weights about 55 g (1.9 oz) without battery.
The personal studio is also connectable to electronic tuner, CD-player, MP3, etc. So enjoy playing along just like in a studio!
PS. Always remove the pick up mute from the bell when not in use. Condensed air may damage the equipment.

I have one (trombone mute plus ST9) on order but couldn't find the battery spec anywhere - really annoying when the post comes, but then it takes a week to get hold of the right battery.
My case is very tight fitting so I don't think I can store the mute in the bell - but thanks for the tip, it's worth knowing.
How many hours life do you think you get from a battery? I can see I am going to have to find a charger and rechargeables!

A battery is included if you have ordered a brand new kit. Due to the Owner's Manual a manganese battery will last about 12 hours. I got my SB system in November last year and still I haven't replaced the original battery. Warming up, long tones and slurs I do with the pick up mute alone. That works much better than using a normal practicing mute. Myself I use the ST9 unit when I want to play along to music. And that's really fun!
