What clarinet do you think is the best?
1. Please don't argue. Just state your opinion of your favorite. Nothing else. No trying to convince otherways.
2. I'm just curious... so no big competition.
I have no decision yet, since I am currently on a Normandy but will be buying an R-13 next week sometime.

If money were no object, I ditto Mario's vote: Rossi
If money is an object and you want a good pro grade horn for a reasonable amount of money, go ahead and consider the Buffet R-13. Also, consider the LeBlanc, Yamaha, and Selmer equivalents. These "big 4" brands are the best of the mass produced high quality pro grade horns. If you get a chance, try out three each of these horns against three R-13s and let your ears and hands do the decision making. You might be surprised at what you find.
I personally own a Buffet Festival (sister to the R-13 with more gadgets on it). However, other posters on this BBS have every right to believe that their LeBlanc, Selmer, Yamaha horn of equivalent quality are equally good, and maybe, just maybe slightly better on a horn-by-horn comparison.

Herbert Wurlitzer. But in the wrong hands it will be worse than a Vito. (personally I can't afford one and am verry hapy with my Buffet RC)

Selmer 10SII. You will know how it is good by playing one.

I don't know.
MOST of the major American symphony players play Buffet R-13s. There are exceptions.
That may be because virtually all of the last generation of clarinetists played Buffets and they were the teachers of this generation.
In France, that's all you'll see. In Germany and Austria, the use the Oehler system; quite different from the Buffet.

Amanda;
There are good R13's and bad R13's. You'll have to select a good one. The ratio of good to bad(this is what I was told -- I have no proof)run something like this:
1 out of 10 is outstanding
1 out of 10 is poor
8 out of 10 are OK
Many of the OK ones are optimized and become much better horns.
Cheers,
Paul

IMHO this is akin to asking an automobile owner their favorite car. Try several of each make. A lot depends on the
end use(s). Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, to paraphrase an old saying. I personally am pleased with the
quality of LeBlanc.

best is pretty loose. (who is the 'best' student in your school -- might depend on the subject, how much you count sports, etc.)
my everyday clarinet -- in preference to my R13, which I have not touched in a year -- is a Silva Bet made by the Cundy Bettoney company.

Amanda said she is getting her R-13 soon. You're not supposed to tell her there are better clarinets at this stage. Buyer's remorse is not a pretty sight.
Now for a more serious response:
The R-13 is typically a fine instrument and will grow with you over a lifetime. You will be quite pleased with it. And, the increased amount of practice that you will put in over your "old" clarinet will make you a far better player than if you had not made the upgrade.
At some point you may even try custom mouthpieces and barrels as you progress. The R-13 is suitable for all levels of playing and a better instrument is not necessary, ever. That doesn't mean you won't eventually get a different one, or in a different key, or a bass.
