This is where an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.
1. Always swab out the bore after each session. Always do it, no matter what kind of clarinet (wood or plastic) you have. This saves the pads from water rot.
2. Never eat or drink sugary drinks and then play your horn. The food particles and the sugar will gunk up your horn very quickly, with the damage ranging from mildly disgusting to outright expensive to fix. Again, you are saving your key pads from a premature and undeserved death. Therefore, always brush your teeth before playing and rinse your mouth out with water just before playing your horn.
With these two things in mind, you should never have to take your horn to a pro to get the bore cleaned out. Now, a pro (tutor or woodwind tech, either one) can show you tricks to keep the register key tone hole and the left thumb tone hole relatively clean with a Q tip or a soft pipe cleaner, but typically, this doesn't need to be done too often.
If you have already gunked up the bore of your horn, take it to a good woodwind tech to get it cleaned inside and out and to make sure all of the pads are cleaned off and the bore is thoroughly clean. A very good tech may take all of the keys off and start from scratch. Please leave this kind of detailed work for the pros. The last thing you want to do is attempt to reassemble your horn and lose a spring or a small set screw in the process. Some folks will try it on a beater horn, but if you value your investment or you are not that mechanically inclined, leave this kind of work for the pros.
