I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Batiste on two occasions when I gave workshops/master classes at Southern University. Not only was he a delightful person and a very knowledgeable clarinet pedagogue, but his jazz playing was monstrous! The "Clarinet Summit" LP he made with Jimmy Hamilton, David Murray and John Carter showcases some of the most virtuosic and "modern" playing one would never had expected to hear from this senior New Orleanian!
The last time I saw him -- probably about 15 years ago -- he told me that he was in the process of writing a clarinet concerto; does anyone know if this ever came to fruition?
