I just bought a gold plated Woodstone ligature (as a gift for friend).
It's a really nice ligature in the Bonade style, but perhaps better made and more stylish. I tried it and it plays nicely - projection, response, etc.
Here's a link to their website - facility with Japanese would be helpful, but you can negotiate the picture links well enough without it:

Very interesting looking compact double case there too, and lots of gadgets for saxophones.
In the US, the ligatures can be purchased at Roberto's in New York.

Just what I need--another ligature. But thanks for the report anyway.

Thanks very much! I remember looking at a post like this a LONG time ago from someone who had bought it in Japan (Hiroshi maybe?) and I thought it was very exotic and nice. And now I know where I can get one (I looked online and couldn't find one before). Thanks very much!

They're great, but pretty expensive. a thicker plating then bonade ligs.
Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

True- I am usually really cheap with things, but once I played one I was hooked.

Hi y'all,
I'm curious, is the contact point with the reed circular (around the perimeter of the circular cut-out) or Bonade-like? It's difficult to tell from the cross-section depicted on the website.
Thanks,
Chris

As I recall (with rough estimates to US dollars.)-
Copper- $60, Gold Plate- $80, Satin Plate- $100, Solid Silver- $200
These are the prices if you buy them from Ishimori in Tokyo. I don't know the prices at Roberto's.
Ed- This post has been cleared of deamons. }:)

I just checked Roberto's. They're prices are around the same. And I didn't see the silver. I only saw the copper, gold, and satin at Roberto's.

To those who have played these: which one do you like the best, gold, matte, copper, or silver? I noticed that the gold one is squared off. I don't read japanese, so I can't tell if they claim a difference in the sound, or if the differences are mostly cosmentic. Might just have to buy one to add to my "toy" collection.

I like the look of the other lig on the Ishimori website -- the one with the black pressure plate, bungie cords, and single brass screw (à la Vandoren Optimum). Does Roberto's in NYC carry those too?

Agreed indeed! Honestly speaking I tried a gold plated alto sax model ligature replacing BG Eddie Daniels clarinet model temporaly. Performance of alto has been improved so much without saying. But it worked far better than BG did for clarinet. I plan to buy authentic clarinet model some time later (basic configuration for clarinet differs little). My setting is ESM JP7 hardrubber mouthpiece plus Rico Grand Concert Evolution #3 or ESM JP5 plus Rico Grand Concert Thick Blank #3.

SDR,
Roberto's does not carry the "bungie cord" model (Kadama).
Mags1957,
The squared off ligature is the saxophone "Dukoff" knockoff. Roberto's website misplaced the photo. Just check the link above.

Ok, ok, ok so I got one. I figured I "needed" a gold custom Japanese ligature to match my gold Custom Yamaha.
The images of the ligature do not really indicate that the reed end of it is a bit squared off. This aids the added isolation of the reed begun by the parallel rails ala Bonade.
Sound? I must compare to my current favorite which is the Vandoren Leather with the metal plate. The Ishimori allows gobs of reed to vibrate rendering a very big sound for a metal ligature. Still, volume for volume it is does not allow for as much all out gusto as the Vandoren. On the other hand, since there is a more solid platform to the all metal Ishimori, it does get a more pointed articulation.
There is no comparison to the Bay gold ligature which squelches the sound by comparison. And as for the actual Bonade, the Ishimori is much better made and as far as I can tell does the job better due to the material as well as the "boxy" bottom.

I use the Sprigg's floating rail ligature and find that it is often hard to get the mouthpiece off, and still keep the ligature in place, when switching between Bb and A. How does this ligature stay on?
thanks

That's the problem with lucite clarinets, you can never find 'em...

Dear Jeff,
The Ishmimori Custom ligature can be tightened down like crazy. I like being able to constrain slightly warped reeds and this one is great for that. It's also worth mentioning that I worried about it "fitting" my mouthpiece which is a really narrow cocobolo Greg Smith. It has tons of room left even if I place it high and really tighten her down.

Thanks paul I love the spriggs but it falls off but then the other ligs don't seem to let the reed vibrate as well. thanks for the info.

I think he may have been kidding.
By the way, one needs to be very open to trying different places along a reed to get the right results from a ligature. The Bonade/Ishimori work best (for me) placed just below the line of ligature........pretty high up on the reed. Conversely, my other favorite (and quite different ligature), the Vandoren leather with the metal plate works best low on the reed and the Eddy Daniels seems to fall in between............weird.
