What's your thoughts about Buffet's tight control on new instruments' price?

it's their product, theres a huge demand. people want to pay premium prices.

more clarinet manufacturers are going to try to get in on the price action to pull the discouraged players to their instruments

supply and demand

Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

for the music industry as a whole- it is a good thing.
long term problems arise when companies try to constantly undercut each other.

For the small shops they're a blessing - due to smaller quantities their own price is probably higher than a big discounter's, and the structure of their businesses often doesn't allow them to lower the pants as far as a discounter can.
So a manufacturer has two choices - either set a fixed retail price to allow the small shops (with often very loyal customers) to survive, or just lets the market play, in which case the prices may drop dramatically. You as a customer would get just the bare horn, no extras, no counselling, minimal warranty etc. A fixed retail price allows the shop some wiggle room for tossing in extras or offering free adjustments for x years etc.

The manufacturer ends up selling a mass-market product with minimal customer loyalty. You can choose to sell over the price alone, or you can position yourself as a reliable long-term partner.

Plus, there's the whole cross-border business - why would I want to shop locally when I can have the same thing for half the price across the ocean?

(duh, there we have it - I've relapsed into marketing speak)

My thoughts...

- Glad I bought mine in '02 for $1699.
- Glad I don't play a string instrument. We have about the least expensive instrument in the orchestra (which we make up for by having lots of them).

That means the Yamaha CSG is better AND cheaper.

Their prices are about to change. I was told by a dealer this week that Buffet's prices were going up AGAIN 7/1/07. So, if you're in the market get one within this month or you're facing another hike in price. He told me that he didn't even know how much it would be yet. His rep. didn't know. I've been looking for an R-13 (I like to keep one around) and have had sticker shock for a month or so. There are still a few demos and left-overs from the Brook Mays stock around if you can find the people who bought those up. However, if you're dependant upon an online seller or music store you're going to have to cough up the extra cash.

In the UK they're not much less than $2,567 - with the current exchange rate they're around $2,456.05 (less the 17.5% VAT).

Though the cost of the postage (or return flight if you're planning a trip over here) is not included.
