 ACt/SAT Scores???
Author: inspiring musician
Date:   2007-06-15 00:26

Okay so next year im gonna be a senior in high school and i've already made up my mind on what music conservatories i'll be auditioning for, and yes I've been prepraring these auditions since may of this year, so here are the schools:

Eastman School of Music
North Carolina School of Arts
Manhattan School of Music
Mannes School of Music

All of these schools dont require SAT or ACT, accept for North Carolina. My question is overall will this determine alot about acceptance into the program, because I dont have an impressive ACT score. So, will tha audition outweigh more than the test scroe??
please, serious feedback
thank you

If a school has an ACT/SAT requirement, they won't even consider you for the music program until you are accepted into the college overall, so you may want to see if you can retest (if necessary, take a test-prep copurse first).

So.... it would be a good idea over the summer to try to imprrive whatever deficiencies you had in the testing areas.

well you see all of the schools above, except one DON'T require them, but they are recommended, overall would I still have a chance if i didnt submit the scores?? because overall wouldn't the audition be more important??

I would think that if you sent ACT/SAT scores that they would also see you are an intellectual individual. You said you don't have an impressive ACT score. Take it as many times as you can. My first time taking the SAT in 7th grade I made a 940 and this year I made a 1250(just verbal and math) I'm gonna take it a couple more times probably 4 since I have two years of HS left. I guess scores show them you are serious about education, but yes in the whole scheme of it an audition should be a more important factor. BTW, NCSA has an AMAZING clarinet instructor. Igor something I believe. It's a great school, great campus, good community.

If the application states something along the lines of:

"ACT, SAT, GRE, etc...are not required, but recommended" then odds are that if you are an " A student" but a "C musician" you will not get accepted. If you are a "C student" and "A musician" you have a chance of getting accepted based upon your audition and the instrumental needs of the school.

For example, Manahattan doesn't require the GRE for Graduate Students. I have several acquaintences who had attended Manhattan, earned a Masters in Performance, but never took the GRE. I've personally known a few foreign students who could barely speak English fly through ESL and earn a Bachelor's degree from U.S. Conservatories. General acedemia is not the highest concern at most U.S. schools labeled "Conservatory"

University and State Schools generally have a higher general academic requirement for their associated "Schools of Music" than independent Conservatories. If you are a fantastic musician, but poor student, you would have a better chance getting accepted to a Conservatory.

Depends on the school...I can't speak for the programs you're applying for, but my alma mater Oberlin Conservatory, officially part of Oberlin College, has a separate application process from the general College. And on that separate application they actually specify that while test scores/academic transcripts are required, they will overlook less-than-impressive numbers in favor of a good audition. Once I was there, I found out that they really only took GPAs and test scores into account if your audition put you right on the acceptance cut-off line.

So, best check with the programs in question.

Sending scores won't hurt unless they're actually bad. There's nothing wrong with a mediocre score since you're not going to pursue an academic major. Your comments are rather vague about your own score, and I can respect that- but I'm just trying to help you distinguish between mediocre and bad. My score was decent for me, but a lot of my friends applying for really selective universities and liberal arts colleges would've probably taken the SAT I test a second (or third?) time without question. As it is, I study music performance at one of the foremost universities in the world, so I don't think your score will be much of an issue with your list. I have a friend who also applied to my school for an academic major, and she was lightyears ahead of where I was academically, and had an almost perfect 2400. She was denied admission. You can ask the schools you apply to how their process works. Some schools have separate admissions processes, while others (like the schools you've listed I believe) accept you completely as a music institution, regardless of let's say Eastman's ties to UofR or Mannes' to New School.
Again, I don't know your score, so I could be wrong. Most schools look at audition, though. How is your GPA? If you have a decent GPA and a decent HS courseload on your transcript that can help your case a lot. Take the tests over again while you have time, however. Take the SAT, you might do better in that sort of setting. Trust me, only ask these questions if you've done your best- because trying to slide by with something you're not comfortable with isn't worth it. You don't want to regret something so silly in a couple years.

Some schools have completely independent admissions processes for the university and the music department. If you audition well and do poorly academically, the music department will likely accept you and the school won't. In that case, tough beans, you're out, though if the music department wants you badly enough they may be able to pull some strings. If you audition poorly and have good academics, you may get accepted to the university but not the music department. At this point, you'd likely be allowed into the university undeclared or with a different major. Some schools will then allow you to apply to the music department for a change of major, at which point you'll reaudition.

Not how it works everywhere, just what I'm familiar with.

Meg,

When were you at Oberlin. I believe I was there at the same time as you, as I was there 95-99. Bob Hoit. If this is the same person I believe it was, drop me an email if you want to talk a bit. If not, well then my memory must not be what it once was and sorry to bother.

ciao
