 Mahler and Barenboim

Just finished listening to the recent Mahler 7th and 9th symphonies with Barenboim...the woodwinds are superb and the interpetations incredible.
They are on TIME Warner and are excellently played by the Berlin State Orchestra...well worth a listen!

Good news! Chicago definitely misses Barenboim but it's good to hear that he's doing great stuff elsewhere. I'll definitely have to check it out.

A student here is moving over to Berlin this summer and Mr. Combs has made it possible for her to study with the principal of that orchestra. It is sure to be an interesting experience... once she brushes up on her German.

"Chicago definitely misses Barenboim " You mean the orchestra?
I wonder how the Barenboim Mahler's compare to the Bernsteins.

David,

Thanks for pointing those recording out. I'll search them down.

It would be an interesting discussion:
How we admire the interpretation of conductors playing the same work, with a different results,
vs
How we talk on this board about clarinetist maintaining absolute fidelity to the composer's intentions.

I recall Dan Leeson posted a while back that he no longer listens to new recording of K622, for they all sound the same.

I think from reading previous posts, we could put into lists those posters who prefer the conducting of Neville Mariner or James Levine (very servicable, correct readings) and into another list who prefer Askenazy or Barenboim (to my thinking often inspired by the muses).

I must have missed that bit. Where was that?

So far my favorite Mahler recordings are those recorded by San Francisco Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting. The recording of the 6th symphony was done from September 12-15 2001. As you might notice, they started the recording the day after the World Trade Center tragedy and it is a powerful performance. Check them out if you get a chance. They all deffinetly deserve to be considered with all of the other great Mahler cycles.

Not a fan of Amerian orchestras and Mahler ... much prefer thier German cousins.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Just gotta say..if you haven't heard the recent recordings of the Statskappelle Berlin with Barenboim you are really missing something.
