 Mitchell Lurie vs V12
Author: Aussie Nick

I play on 3.5 V12's and I'm about to order some Mitchell Lurie Premiums to try. I know they tend to be soft so I'm deciding between 4.5 and 5's. Is anyone aware of what would be similar i strength to a V12 3.5?

My opinion is that the Mitchell Lurie's don't hold a candle at all to the V12's. If you want to compare a reed that is more comparable than maybe try the Gonzalez, or the Grand Concert Evolution or Reserve. The cane is a lot better and the cut is also.

I doubt that even Mitchell plays on them!

I have no problems with ML...9 out of 10 reeds in a box are at least "okay".

If it is of help, my daughter usually uses the ML Premium reeds in a 4.5. When she didn't tell me she needed more of them on short notice (the local shops do not stock above 3.5), she found a few of my unused V12 #4 reeds worked just fine for her.

So, I would suggest nothing higher than a 4,5 to start. Since they come in boxes of 5, get a pack of 4 and a pack of 4.5. When you decide which you prefer, order some in bullk.

In my experience, a Vandoren V12 #3.5 is roughly the same hardness as a Mitchell-Lurie 4.5.

Also, in my experience, Mitchell-Lurie reeds took a quality nosedive a couple years ago. I get better results with the V12s. I asked my shop to dig in to their reserves and find me the old 10-packs.

I use V12s and MLs in various strengths for various mpcs and testing

I find that the MLs get softer quicker due to a thinner and longer tip cut. The V12s handle long playing times much better. V12s seem to have a thicker and longer middle section too which gives a more full tone IMHO

I haven't done this in ages but hold them up to the light to compare the vein thickness and overall thicknesses in various areas.

You might like to try Vic Olivieris. They are not the same company that used to be in Spain. I believe they are in Georgia (the state in the US not the country) but I've tried them and found them to be very good.
