So I will me majoring in music ed. in the fall, and I really need an upgrade from my plastic reso-tone. My professor sugessted that I look into used clarinets- is this a good idea?
What kinds of things should I look for when I play these horns?
What sort of brands models should I look for?
-I know R-13, but that's basically it- is this a good choice?
How much money should I be looking to spend?

I'm completely happy with my new Orsi and Weir, however, they are so young, that I'm sure there are none that are used. The price is about $2,300 or so.

Don't get rid of your plastic, you'll need it for backup.
Add on the cost of a service for the plastic and a serious service for whatever second hand one you buy.
Might be an idea to find out now if you have to have an A or if you need one that you can borrow (same for other instruments).
Keep thinking outside the box, are there any recently graduated students who might be looking to sell their instruments? Perhaps look to advertise in a 'wanted' column at your new college.
Are there any pros with 50 Bbs/As who might be willing to rent one out.
Also, consider that in college you may not be living in the best of surroundings. Get something that will do the job but that is replaceable and wont break your heart if your dorm mate vomits in it or if it gets nicked or damaged.
(sorry - been a student. Wouldn't want to take my clarinets with me in dorms/halls/student housing!)

If you have a little time, consider looking at the used clarinets on our classifieds. I've bought three gems of clarinets off of the classifieds and have seen some other really good deals on there. You can ask if you can get a two week trial and make sure you ask for registered or insured mail with a tracking number and pay via some method where you have proof of payment (I used paypal).
And if you want a new one, take a look at Tom Ridenour's Lyrique (you can do a search on the website). Around $800 or so. If you get a custom, you'll be getting a great horn at a great price! I have one of those and really like it (and the mouthpiece it comes with is really very good too!)

Try the intermediate-upper level used Yamahas, Buffet, Selmer, LeBlanc, etc. Try reading up on different models through a site that sells them, such as wwbw.com or prowinds or weinermusic (add on others, I'm just listing a few).
But, yes, especially as a music ed. major, do not get rid of the plastic one!!! You may need it for marching, demonstrations, poor weather, places you don't feel comfortable bringing an expensive instrument, if it's hot or cold, or it has to sit in a car, etc.

i highly reccommend the Ridenours Lyrique. I used a Plastic Vito 4th - 12th grade, a Buffet R13 in college, and a Selmer Signature after college - i like the Lyrique the best. I play in a college level wind symphony. the Lyrique is great quality for a great price.

If you are taking lessons next year (would assume that you are at least for 30 min a week) you may want to wait and ask your teacher what he/she would want you to get. That way if the teacher is a "buffet guy" you won't end up getting the "wrong" brand.

My teacher is actually a Buffet artist- forgot to mention that. We've also talked about selecting a new horn for me, but I just wanted to see what people hear had to say.

My used horns from the 50's (My A) and 60s (my Bb) are my first set and my back up set are horns I purchased in the mid to late 90's. My R-13 A from 1955 has to be the best A I have played - and two top level techs also agree its a great horn. The point is, a used horn in great condition can be an affordable option to buying new.
I've also heard good things about the Lyrique Horns mentioned above. These horns are priced around the range of a used R-13, if not a few $100 cheaper.
It's nice that your teacher is open to the idea of purchasing a used horn.

Through two clarinet performance degrees, noone, absolutely noone, said my clarinet was anything other than ideal. It's a 1969 R13 my parents bought for me my freshman year of high school (1982-3), and granted, while my years at college (1986-1991) were a lot closer to 1969 then than they are now, I love the instrument to death!
Maybe GBK will put me in his will for a "matching" A that he might happen to have laying around. Mine's from 1985 and I don't like it nearly as much as my Bb.

The closest I can come to your 1969 R13 Bb, is my 1965 R13 A clarinet.
Unfortunately, I use it every day.

Without having read the postings so far, I would simply reommend you buy a Buffet (R13, E11 if $$ is an issue) and stop trying to make other brands sound "as good". Remember, used is often as good--if not better--than brand new.....and always, a lot cheaper. Also, if you are going to major in clarinet, you may want to consider purchasing a set--Bb and A--from the start to be able to take advantage of orchestra as well as repretoire calling for the A.

Which is why some people say to wait till you meet your teacher. There are some clarinetists and teachers that have the mentality that Buffet is the best. Period. You may want to wait, but if your teacher isn't going to shun you for NOT having a buffet, definitely look into your options.
Personally, I think it's ridiculous that teachers could be so jaded that it's recommended you wait to see if your teacher is a "buffet nazi". I would never allow a teacher to tell me that I have to buy something that I don't want or that I can't use an instrument that I bought with my heard-earned money and chose because I liked my sound with it. I'd switch teachers before I switched horns to something that I didn't like as much but was 'brand-worthy'.

How is it ridiculous that you might wait and see? There are a number of fantastic teachers who happen to have strong views on equipment. Believe it or not, they may know a little more than the student. If the student knows so much why are they bothering to study with them?

So am I misunderstanding something? It sounds to me as though he has talked to his teacher, who presumably did not insist on a Buffet or that would have been mentioned in the first message. Right?

As I said earlier, my teacher is a Buffet artist, so she recomends them, but she is not a nazi. She probably does have some connections with the company, which may mean some sort of deal for me.
