 Audition Mahler 1
Author: Wannes

I recently received my sheet music for the audition of a youth orchestra, and it was the 1st clarinet part from Mahler 1. It is the last page, which ranges from 49 till the end. I read the score, but wasn't able to find out why exactly I'm demanded to play thís part of Mahler 1. There are parts that are much more difficult.

Can anyone advice me about this part or Mahler (1) in general?

Thanks in advance.

Although there are more "exposed" solo passages for the 1st clarinet (ex - 3rd movement), playing in unison (tuning, tonguing) with the other clarinets from meas 49 on, in the last movement is also essential.

Learn the entire symphony - tutti passages as well as solo sections...GBK

The easier parts in an audition are what can trip you up the most.

Without an orchestra behind you, it is surprisingly easy to make mistakes in counting rests and longer notes, or rush the tempo in some places. Sections like the one you are being tested upon are also about the playing style and following the music notation precisely. For example at 56 - 57 the notes are all long, but play the dynamics and markings exactly. Can you do a creas. without going flat? Do you splatter on the hard accents? There is more to this than you think.

Take GBK's advice and listen a lot to the entire symphony. Good luck!

What the last page of the part won't tell you that the first page would have is that this movement is scored for clarinet in C. Unless you have been given a transposed part (which I doubt) I suspect that the real reason it is on the audition list is to test your transposition skills.

Best regards,

Well, that's true. As it is my first (real) audition: can I be expected to play with a piano reduction, or do I need to play the music solo?

In my life I've auditioned for 2 youth orchestra's - both have been without accompaniment (even on a concerto) and both were in front of the Music Director - not held behind a screen.

I second Jack Kissinger's advice about the Mahler. Check your part against the score to determine if it is for clarinet in C or the transposed part.

It is a part for C-clarinet. Transposing isn't really a problem.

My concerto (Mozart Rondo) is with accompaniment, as I'm told.

Thanks for the response.

(I have already done the survey)

Well, as this topic on Mahler 1 is there already, I'm wondering how I can play the B5-Cis6 trill best (in tune). Could anyone help me out?

B5 to C#6 trill has 3 good possibilities:

Play the B5 and trill to C#6 by opening the G# throat key

or

Play the B5 and trill to C#6 by using the 2nd (from the top) right side key.

or

Play the B5 as TR x o x / x x x and trill to C#6 by going to:

TR x o x / x x o

Thank you very much for the last one! The others were horribly sharp, and this one helped me out!
