 Pseudo-beginner question

So its been many years since I last picked up a clarinet, but I just found an old beat up one in my girlfriend's attic and took it out to play. I have no trouble getting a sound out, but Im having an issue with a certain note. I'll have to describe it, because I'm way out of practice and don't remember the name.

So when you are playing a C (the one right above open G) you are holding down all of the holes with your fingers, and with your pinky you hit a key to turn it from a D to a C. Anyway, that key doesn't seem to work, be it with or without the octave key. Did i forget how to blow or finger it properly? Or is it more likely something wrong with my clarinet?

Question #1, are ALL of the pads OK ??, If so, are they seating well? Q #2, does the D#/Eb [next pad higher] "blow open" when you try for C ? Even a slight leak will destroy the C [and B]. When I look for this, I'll either "tie down" that pad [rubber band] or stopper the tone hole with a piece of masking tape to check. This has been discussed by far-better repairers than I, so I suggest you Search our archives for their help. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Is it possible to have a repair tech look at your horn?

Some techs don't normally charge to give you an estimate of what needs to be done. It could certainly save you a lot of wasted time. If the music shop won't let you talk to the tech, find another store or tech.

mrfredman,

If you're not sure of the fingering, I believe that there is a fingering chart available on this web site that might be helpful.

Regards,
Hans
