Any experience playing Paquito D'Rivera arrangements?
Author: Brenda 2017

There are some interesting arrangements and compositions by Paquito that are calling to me from the International Opus catalog. Has anyone played any of these pieces, for example the "Aires Tropicales" and excerpts from the "Aires", or "A Song For Peace"? I'd love to prepare performance pieces that are completely different, and Latin rhythms are something that most of us find very exciting. His "Meringue" includes a 5/8 rhythm that should bring a sparkle to the eye. With a long background in Central American culture these rhythms should be very familiar.

While I await responses I'll see if the web site offers sound file excerpts as promised.

There is a book of Paquito arrangements with the combo accompaniment.

Here's a link to it:

I have volume one and it is very good!

Well it looks like not too many North Americans or Europeans have tried this music. That means that I will, then!

I ordered Paquito's "Preludio y Merengue" for piano trio (with clarinet and cello). This piece along with "Danzon" and "Afro" is part of the larger composition for woodwind quintet, "Aires Tropicales". In conversation with Luis Rossi he mentioned to me that Paquito's music is always very pretty and entertaining. He also recommended the "Danzon" for piano trio.

As well I ordered a piece by another Cuban composer, Ignacio Cervantes, his "2 Cuban Dances" for clarinet duet. I'll let you know what we think once we start rehearsals.

Another one of his pieces for wind quintet is "Wapango", an upbeat jazzy tune, extremely well arranged. It's lot of fun to play!
