I was watching a Buffet Eb clarinet on that site that people don't like to say the name of. It sold yesterday for about $450 (I didn't buy it, but almost did). The fascinating thing to me about that horn was that there was no barrel. Is anyone familiar with the barrelless Eb? How would you tune such a thing?

tuning is simple pull out the mouthpiece.
I once examined an old A clarinet made by the Sax firm in the 1880s. It had bell, lower joint, and upper joint+barrel in one piece. it had an amaizing sound!

My teacher has a barrelless Bb Buffet made around 1910. Nice playing horn after a couple of good techs tinkered with it.

Dave...I really don't know if either of those links will get you to the Ebay page, or whether it's ok for me to paste them here, but that might work. I'm still wondering about the tuning. I've had to make some pretty major barrel adjustments in my Eb playing life, and I've never pulled the mouthpiece out for anything..maybe it just seems unnatural to me (maybe that's why they quit making these monsters too).
