 London Trio
Author: Lynn

Just heard a recording of oboe, clarinet, and bassoon trios performed by the "London Trio." Anyone, particularly those from the Mother Country, know any details about this group? I'm particularly interested in the clarinetist because he/she plays quite nicely. The recordings featured Ibert, Milhaud, Tomasi, Poulenc, and Villa Lobos trios.

Did some searching but the closest "London Trio" I came up with was this: http://www.whitecottagewebsites.co.uk/lst/londonserpenttrio.html

I believe you're talking about this CD:

http://www.hbdirect.com/album_detail.php?pid=787843

The performers are: Neil Black (Oboe), Keith Puddy (Clarinet), Roger Birnstingl (Bassoon)

Keith Puddy is a relatively well known clarinetist and teacher, who also plays a lot on historical instruments. A very nice CD of his is "The Early Clarinet Family" on which he plays on various early instruments.

The trio have long since disbanded i think. I did a chamber music week with Neil Black with the trio i'm in, we played the Villa Lobos. Anyone know if there is actually a score for it. I would make it a lot easier to rehearse.

I once tried that Villa Lobos trio, but we couldn't keep it together. Our parts had no score, but that might not have helped without a conductor. I listened to that very CD but still it didn't help me in keeping it going.

Puddy probably played on his 1010s in that recording though his preference is to play Hawkes/Martels (leaving aside earlier instruments). You can hear the Hawkes/Martel instruments on a CD he did in conjunction with another player (Hinson??) in which they played the Poulenc duo and Puddy played the Poulenc Sonata (I think it was). The Martel does sound fairly different.

There is a score for the V-L trio published by Max Eschig but it is expensive. The parts published by International are confusing because V-L notated some of the time signatures in a very strange way. If anyone is really interested I have the score and can show you how to correct the parts.
