 Buffet RC

I keep seeing references to Buffet RC Prestige clarinets and am curious about my Buffet RC clarinet, which is keyed in A and has silver plated keys. Is this essentially the same as an RC Prestige? Or are there differences? Regardless, it is a sweet horn and plays excellently. I've been a fan of R13's for a long time, but I think that the RC is a superior horn. I'd appreciate any info available.

Thanks.

I also have an RC clarinet and think it is a great instrument. The RC Prestige has the same bore as the RC but offers the usual 'Prestige' extras including the Ab/Eb key, an adjustable thumb rest, goretex pads and higher quality wood.

I had both. I lost my RC and my brother now has my RC Prestige.

As I lost my RC with my Kasper-cicero mouthpiece and bought then a RC prestige with 5RV mouthpiece, my RC sounded far better than RC prestige. Typical experience of the 'good mouthpiece rather than good clarinet".

I would recommend to tune up your RC with Chadash barrel and a good mouthpiece such as Greg Smith Kasper style mp rather than buying a RC prestige. This sums up to below 350$. This may be far lower than the price difference between two clarinets.

By the way, I found RC prestige has a rectanglar bore between the bell and the lower joint. Some say this enhances overtone and was developped by the designer Carret. I did not notice this bore in RC. Does yours have?

I may be totally wrong, but I always thought that the only difference between the RC and the "Prestige" RC was the extra Ab/Eb key. Since they are both RC's, the bore specifications should be the same.

I currently play an RC Prestige A clarinet. William is totally incorrect in saying that the only difference is the extra key.

Differences:
1) Wood selected from a smaller ring in the tree (closer to the center which makes the sound ring more and reduces the risk of cracking because of the higher density of the wood)

2) Unstained wood.

3) Metal tenon rings on the upper and lower joint.

4) Yes... the extra Ab/Eb key

5) Slightly different keywork, for all prestige models which is slightly more flat on the plateau keys and less shapr on the rings, than the "regular" keywork.

6) Silver plating

7) Adjustable thumbrest

Those are the differences that I know. Guy Deplus was the main clarinetist involved in the design of this particular model. You may try asking some of our French friends or better yet, throw your question over to Francois Kloc at Buffet. He's sure to have a complete answer. Good luck!

Best,
Michael
