I have seen several web sites that advertise live music lessons using webcams. Apparently, both the teacher and the student are using cameras and mikes to be able to see and hear each other during a lesson. Has anyone had experience with this and how well did it work?

I and a friend, a retired principal clarinetist of a symphony here in the South and a name well known to this list, are going to make a stab at testing the feasibility of online lessons for students who live in the area, but are too far away to travel for weekly lessons. The experiment will begin soon after June 7.
I've taught several online course for UCLA in the past, but never music. However, though the pitfalls are many, I think it might work well if done correctly.
Several things seem clear from the outset:
- Teaching an instrument can never be effective unless there is in-person contact from time to time. Therefore, we aren't planning to accept students (especially beginners) who aren't willing or able to travel to one or more initial lessons and then a lesson every so often after that.
- The technology must be good: a good stereo microphone, a high-resolution Web cam, good stereo speakers, a fast internet connection, and as important as the rest, decent video conferencing software or services.
I'd be glad to update anyone off list as the experiment progresses, if you send me a note.
My e-mail address is bmcgar(at)comcast(dot)net
Cheers.
