One of my happier high school memories is taking a clarinet quartet (4 Bb sopranos) to solo and ensemble contest. We had so much fun, that we played at each other's houses for the next few years. Our favorite piece was by Yvonne Desportes, called French Suite. Has anyone else had the pleasure to play in a clarinet quartet, either 4 sopranos or a mixed quartet?

I had the pleasure of playing the Uhl Divertimento. It was a lot of fun, and was a quartet that was appropriate for the quartet. The instrumentation for that quartet is three sopranos and a bass clarinet. I played it at school last semester and was loads of fun. If anyone gets the opportunity to play it, take advantage of it.

I frequently did them in college, and still do (on occasion) as an adult. As a teacher, I also use clarinet and saxophone quartets as a laboratory in the 'jamming' skills.
A particularly enjoyable source of music is the 1948 book "Clarinet Sessions." It contains duets, trios and quartets that are pretty easy for an accomplished player. I also play frequently from the Rubank collections.
You can't beat 'em!

I've played in clarinet choirs before, and they're alot of fun. This past spring i was helping to organize a clarient/flute choir, and that was a neat experience. It would be fun to try a clarinet quartet too, maybe we'll organize one next year =)

I love doing duets and quartets. I have played 4 years in Solo and ensemble.... I should have started earlier. This year was bad, tho. But I still love to play in groups of nets (as my friend puts it)

Unfortunately, I have had bad experiences with wind choirs and clarinet choirs. I wanted to enter the clarinet choir when I was just starting the clarinet, but because of the 'girl power' hype at the time - I was not excepted in because I was not a girl, and the clarinet choir was all girls! (And I'm not the kind of person that they liked - And it would make me look silly etc. etc.)
More recentely, I was in a wind choir of about 9 or 10 people and had a similar problem in that I didn't get along with them and eventually we all split. I'd love to be in a quartet or a clarinet choir, if I could only get along with the people in them. I can see why pop bands are always splitting up!

Don't let past experiences ruin things for you. There are plenty of friendly & competent clarinetists around. I always tell my students to go to All-District auditions armed with a duet book. Out of all those folks, you've GOT to meet some good people.
Get yourself a book called Clarinet Sessions, from Shawnee Press. It has duets, trios and quartets. Just work with whatever group you've got at the time.
As for clarinet choirs, they leave me cold. Who needs another conducted ensemble. Much of the enjoyment of quartets is that they're one-on-a-part, and that you as a group are working together to conduct yourselves.
For a list of good starter materials for small groups, visit my website at http://allencole.tripod.com/ensemble.htm
Good luck!

Thanks Allen, I'll give the website a go. I think the problems before were caused by too many people, and by the fact that I was not in my best behaviour mode - some of you on this board know what I mean!
Anyway, I'm definitely thinking about this and will start a new topic if I succeed in this.
Thanks again,
Dave Lee Ennis.
