I've been invited to the Minnesota bass clarinet audition in May. Anyone else here been invited? I have a question about the rep. for clarinet. On the Sibelius Symphony #1 first movement excerpt has anyone else considered playing this on Bb clarinet instead of A clarinet? All of the sustained throat tone B-flats become throat tone A. What do yall think? Thanks!
p.s. I'm also looking for better recordings of these excerpts. Any suggestions for the Tristan and Isolde excerpt?

on my old Yamaha A clarinet (a very nice, hand tuned, instrument that had only one drawback- the B flat completely sucked) this solo was hard work, and the B flat clarinet was a workable solution...
now i play a Buffet RC A clarinet with a Zinner barrel- and the B flat sounds great with at least 3 of my resonance fingering options. This solo is one of my favourites- in fact, just an hour ago i played it at the local music store to compare my RC with a Tosca.
keep playing the good tunes- this is one of them

If a clarinetist is on the jury, you're likely to get a request to play the Sibelius solo again, as written, so you need to be prepared on both instruments.

First - congrats on the invite
2nd - I 120% concur with Ken Shaw. If a clarinetist is behind the screen they will be able to tell which horn you are on and may call you out on it. You must be prepared.
Once you get the job, you can switch horns to your heart's content.
