Just wondering what your thoughts are on oiling the bore of that precious chunk of wood we call a clarinet. How often -what are the signs it needs oiled - does it need oiled at all (ever) - what is bore oil anyway (is there a bore tree from whence we extract the oil?) - can not oiling cause my horn to crack??? Everyone seems to have their own opinion on this one. Thanks!

My personal experience only: I oil the bores of my wooden clarinets and bass clarinets about once a year. I'm always careful to swab every bit of moisture out of the instrument (each joint and barrel individually, including the tenon cavities) after every playing. I've never in my life had a crack (in 20 years of playing wood instruments). Your mileage may vary.

I oil lightly every six months (on or about 4th of July and New Year's). During the hiatus when I quit playing, I still oiled my old clarinet and wiped it off occasionally, to make sure grime wasn't building up, insects weren't setting up hotels and recreation clubs in there, etc.. I've never had a crack.

I always thought that oil just kind of lay on the surface of the blackwood and never soaked in very well. So what I've done is wax the wood twice a year and paint an oil path around that c#/g# hole and oil on the end grain at the tenons. The condensation gets swabbed out or runs out anyway and neither of my clarinets has cracked. I think that the wood needs to be kept clean and treated with SOMETHING to slow down moisture intrusion and reduce decay.
