Hi,
Excuse my ignorance in anything I write but...
I have a a Selmer centered tone - s# starts with a Q (if that matters). It came with a premiere Hite mouthpiece. I've wanted to try another MP and had a Vandoren 11.6 sent to me.
I was surprised to find that it would not fit in the Selmer barrel. I have this old, cheap, extra barrel on hand with it does fit but I wouldn't really consider using that.
I guess the question is: if the size of the Selmer barrel is just slightly smaller then how do I determine what mouthpiece might fit it. I don't ever thin I seen dimensions for mouthpieces which would indicate one what or the other.
I guess the obvious answer would be to go to a store and try each one - that's not possible at this time - and I would love to learn something as to how to determine the size differences.
And if you have any MP's hints as to which might fit this barrel....
I can't see replacing the barrel - or should I?
Many thanks
Paul

Mouthpiece tenons are not standardized to barrel sockets. Barrels change dimensions with age. The choices are to shave (Mom's nail file) cork off your mouthpiece or (carefully, calculatedly, like a furniture refinisher, and with his/her equipment) remove wood from the barrel socket.
It's a crap shoot. What I find amusing is that many of the mouthpieces designed for the Selmer CT do not fit the barrels. Also, the exit bores of these "oval" Selmer mouthpieces are often (I have found) smaller than the CT barrel openings.
Time has taught me that Dave Spiegelthal is right. Plug it in, and if it tunes OK and sounds good, that's your set-up. The proof is in the tuner.

All my Selmer barrels (with my CT and Series 9 clarinets) have a 22mm upper barrel socket.
I only realise this when using my mouthpiece on my plastic Yamaha or someone else's clarinet and it's a loose fit in comparison - especially with Yamaha clarinets.

Well, I know that shaving the cork won't help.
It sems with the Vandoren that there is a raise edge then it is more narrow under the cork. It's the raise edge which is the problem.
I've also noticed that it will start to go in but then becomes too tight to even force it - I guess this would suggest that the inside on the barrel grows more narrow as it goes further in. I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
Of course, the differences are all very minute but just enough.

I did have to turn down the tenon diameter on one mouthpiece I used to use as it was binding, but that's an easy enough operation that can be performed by any tech of worth.

Two barrels came with my CT and never had a problem fitting a mouthpiece.
I have tried maybe three dozen mouthpieces including many custom mouthpieces.

Can I ask -
What mouthpiece do you use with the CT?

The CT is the horn I play the most and I use either a Lomax Classic A1G or the more open Lomax Classic A3.

Thanks for the info.
A bit pricey for me at the moment - but added to my list.

I bought a Selmer C* mpc for my Selmer CT, but the techie sanded some cork from the mpc and with cork grease the mouthpiece became properly tight. Very nice tone, and a relatively inexpensive mouthpiece.

I'll look around for that one. Thanks.
I don't mind sanding down the cork. - I really need to be a t a store which will let me try them but I don't see that happening any time soon.
Thanks for the info.

I don't recall any problems in using a number of mps with the barrels of my P series [1954] C T. Having several Sel barrels, I "finger-check" the diameter-match with the U J top. If close, I try several mps, check mp/barrel top dia. match, and sand [machine if needed] the MP tenon to fit. I dont try to change the barrel. As F Sin. sang, My Way. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
