 Portsmouth, VA...

Are there any woodwind (or brass) specialists in Portsmouth, VA?

I'll be visiting between the 22nd and 29th with the HMS Nelson Royal Naval Volunteer Band (from Portsmouth, UK.), so just in case I need some tenor sax reeds (or the others need valve oil) where or who would you recommend?

Chris, You might try contacting Billy Thomas, bass clarinetist of the Virginia Symphony, in the "Tidewater" area that includes Portsmouth. His day job is as a naval architect; hence the address:

william.g.thomas1@navy.mil

Is Howarth's going to be shipping unfinished oboes during your cruise?

Cheeky monkey!

I'm playing tenor sax in the marching band instead of oboe (they don't allow double reeds on marches - just as well as it's all in flat keys!), but I'll be taking my modified plastic Signet Soloist oboe as I'm not sure if the climate will do my kingwood Howarth any good - better safe than sorry. The other oboe player is taking her Howarth S3, but I will be keeping a load of tools in the tenor case if any battlefield repairs are needed.

There's 38 of us (mostly from HMS Nelson, and several other RN volunteer bands and one member of the Netley Police band) taking part in the city's 123rd Memorial Day parade (28th), and the invitation is connected with the Sister Cities Commission (linking Portsmouth, Hants. with Portsmouth, VA.).

What's the weather like in that part of VA at that time of year?

The weather is nice and beachlike. Low to mid 80s. Maybe 70s if its a "bad" day. Great place

Chris: Golly, you blew off Larry's question . . . from your recent laundry list of stuff that you gotta do to finish those oboes, I suspect folks who get Howarths during your absence will have double reed recorders! (bombards?) Question is, will there be an included baggie filled with keys, posts, screws, etc?

Eu

P.S. Go ahead and take the little piccolo on that trip!

Portsmouth is a fairly obscure place. Tommy Newsome's last home was there (that's where he passed away), but there isn't a whole lot going on there.

Va. Beach is more of a place to go for anything. Best music store used to be Lynn Music, but they were bought out by Music & Arts (to me they are the Walmart of the music industry but without the low, low prices).

btw - I lived in Portsmouth for my first 15 years.
