 Artie Shaw interview
Author: GBK
Date:   2007-05-04 07:59

Interviews by Artie Shaw are very rare. Here is a 2 part 1971 interview with Shaw where he discusses in detail his career, his music, playing the clarinet, the big band era, the music business, and a host of other fascinating insights into his life.

This was originally broadcast as a 2 part radio show, Arnold Dean's "One Night Stand with the Big Bands."

Also on this site are MANY other programs about the big band era.

Of special interest are the interviews with Buddy Defranco (talking about the Tommy Dorsey band), Clarence Hutchenreider (clarinetist with the Glen Gray Casa Loma Orchestra) and a special program about Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall concert, with commentary by Gene Krupa and Harry James.

Well worth the time to listen to the complete programs and hear many of the great tunes and arrangements from the big band era with the descriptions by the original musicians.

The link wouldn't play for me--????? I clicked on the AS interview and waited several minutes......but nothing. I've got Windows Media Player--or is that the problem?

Hi William,

I went to the link above, and then there is a list of interviews. I clicked on Artie Shaw. That opens another page. Scroll down to the Artie Shaw link, I then right click on the link, hit "save target as" and then I saved it to my desktop. Once it loads you can open it and listen to it at your leisure in Media Player.

Hope this helps...

Jim

The quality of the recordings on that Shaw interview are fantastic. "Dancing in the Dark" and "Indian Love Call" sound almost like they were recorded yesterday. Better than anything I can unearth in iTunes for sure.
Wonderful link, and thanks.

What a great link...thank you. Just like Artie himself, opening with his signature tune "Nightmare". Thank you

Study, Practice, Play and Enjoy.
