Some of the funniest people are those that don't know they are funny. Newsom was one of those. I ran into him and Pete Christleib at Zepp's Music in Burbank. They were having Zepp ship their horns to N.Y. for some reason or another and when they left, we opened up their cases and just stared at their saxaphones in awe as if the horns were going to break out playing by themselves. I have missed Newsom and the band since Carson left the tonight show. Now I miss them even more.

You know, I also have a C-melody and tend to launch into Hungarian Rhapsody with it. I wonder if there's any hope...

I can remember writing a college English paper in which I tried to explain why Tommy was a paradigm to to so many musicians who don't play in hair bands or wear clocks around their necks. I'll really miss him and Doc comparing suits.

A couple of months ago, a local talk radio show host here in Minneapolis/St. Paul ("Mischke" on KSTP AM) called Tommy Newsom up on a whim and talked with him for an extended length of time. I wish that casual interview was available. It really gave you a sense of the man.

With great sadness I read GBK's note about Tommy Newsom's demise. I had the great honor of working for the Tonight Show for many years with Johnny Carson and the wonderful band conducted by Doc Sevrengsen and of course knew Tommy very well. He was not only funny, without knowing it, but a perfect gentlemen and wonderful musician. I sure will miss him and will keep him in my memory as a geat human being. See you later Tommy!

I met Tommy when the Tonight show band went on tour after Johnny Carson's retirement. Doc Severinsen and the so-called "X" band were playing at the Paul Masson Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Ca- I had a special pass and got there quite early. When I spotted Tommy, I went over to say hello- when I asked him how he was doing, he responded "Still looking for a good reed"-- I was so taken aback that I offered to chase home and bring him a fresh box- Tommy and I both had a good laugh when I realized he was just pulling my leg....besides wisecracks from the sidelines, Tommy did many of the excellent arrangements that the Tonight show band used; I am especially fond of a unique arrangement he did on "Lay Down Sally". I will miss his musicianship and his dry sense of humor.
