 Give me your opinion!

I have been playing clarinet for approximately 5 years. I currently play on an intermediate Buffet Crampon and wanted to upgrade. I want to get a clarinet that can last me most or all of the way through college. I have looked into the R-13 and I am now considering the Pete Fountain. Can anyone tell me about how these clarinets play, Or can you recommend a clarinet that you think fits my needs??
Thank you for any information that you can give me!!!!!!!
Sincerely,
Stephen :-)

Stephen,
What kind of music do you plan on playing in college?

Classical or chamber, Mark. Hopefully a little jazz.

Stephen, if you're going to play classical and/or chamber, then listen to the Pete Fountain's tone & color very carefully. It may not be as best suited to that type of playing than other models. Perhaps playing it with a few string playing friends would help determine the suitability.

Check the big 4 (Leblanc, Selmer, Yamaha, Buffet) and others if you have access (Eaton, Rossi, Howarth, Patricola, etc.). Bring your teacher along if you can!

Stephen: I own both clarinets that you like and for my money they are both great. It really too bad you don't live in my neck of the wood, because i would let you try both of them. They cost about the same, but I think there are more R13 out there then thier are Fountain. happy hunting.

I own a Selmer 10SII* (* is the latest version signifier here in Japan) with Chadash barrel and Greg Smith Kasper Style mouthpiece. Its tone is very compact and has good projection. However, it may be lacking in volume to use it in orchestra.

If I were to have another, I would try Selmer Signature. Selmer's flagship instrument. They say very good tuning: Compared to 3-4 cents deviations of other clarinets, it is said to have only 1-2 cents. Dark tone. About 2100-220$ in US.

If I were to try R-13, I would choose a Brannenized R-13 by the collaboration of Greg Smith and Brannen with Greg Smith mouthpiece. This is since I read several postings that there are very much performance distribution in R-13s makings. Some say one among 10.
But of course this is how much brannenizing adds to the 1750$ of standard R-13s. If it is 400$-500$ and the total becomes about the same with Signature, I would be at a loss which to select.

I admire Rossi, but its cost 3500$ is too much for me, and I guess its tone may be too mellow or bright to my taste.

Hiroshi;

The Signature also has some manufacturing variation.

Tom Ridenour will select one for you from the Brook Mays stock for a fee and then customize it if you prefer. I believe this service runs between $400 to $1000 depending on the level of his involvement.

Cheers,

Paul
