 college major advice?
Author: grace
Date:   2007-04-28 04:28

I'm a high school clarinetist whose ultimate would be performing in pit orchestras for broadways and various other venues. it's getting close to crunch time for narrowing my college choices and I am still confused on what major will get me where I want to go and hopefully give me several options of where to go with my musical career after college. any suggestions on a major, or even potential colleges to look into, would be most appreciated.

IMO- if you want a job in NYC, you must go to a school there or within a stone's throw.

I am also a high school clarinetist; I'll be a freshman at UCLA as an electrical engineering major, with hopefully a double in music performance. Los Angeles is definitely a great place to get exposed to the performing business, and the culture and diversity there is amazing.

Several universities have a certificate in musical performance which is added to the Bachelor's degree. It's a hard core concentration to prepare you for a performance career. I would do a google search on certificate of performance in music. If you are not already, I would certainly be doubling on the other woodwinds. This is a major deal with many pit orchestras on broadway.

Best Wishes

For the theatre orchestra clarinetist, doubling on all of the other clarinets as well as the saxophones and flute is a must. If you can also play oboe and bassoon, all the better. And if your goal is to play Broadway, I would imagine you must be equally talented on all of the above. I was once told by Jim Christenson--composer and musical director for Disneyword productions--that the Hollywood woodwind recording artists "all had about five instrument under their chairs--and you can't tell which one is their major axe." Then, beyond just being "good", it is often a case of who you know that gets you the gig. So networking is advisable--and if you study in the Big Apple, its a good way to get to know the "right" people.

Major?? I would suggest music education with secondary emphsis on performance. That will get you all the lessons you need and also give you a degree that will be useful if you don't make it on Broadway--or anywhere else.

If you want to be a paid musician, you need more than a performance degree, you need to be able to win auditions --to consistently win auditions, to cast fear into those competing for "your" next spot.

I guess that means that you need to be the star music student on your instrument, and exceed the demands of your performance curriculum.

On the other hand, if you're really good a performing and auditioning, you might just get a teaching certificate --so that you have a day job that's fun to go to everyday.

good luck

I met a fellow last summer in a pit orchestra who did a woodwind doubling major at Ball State University in Indiana. He said it really prepared him for what he wanted to do. He had to do a solo recital on each of his three instruments (saxophone, clarinet, and flute). That might be a program to look into. Another good woodwind doubling teacher is Chris Vadala at the University of Maryland, but he teaches in the jazz studies program, and there is not a woodwind doubling degree. And, there isn't much musical theater at that school...more opera and jazz and traditional classical music.
