Thanks! but what is it's acceptance rate? Is the atmoshpere cutthroat or is it really chilled? Is it only for the Benny Goodman want to be or for anyone who loves music? So many questions, so not enough answers...*shaking head*

the acceptance rate at any good music school is going to be low - after all, the reason they're good is <b>because</b> they're selective!
AFAICT, all the good schools have their share of great people, stuck-up people and braggadocios. Time averages everything out.

That isn't very reassuring. Aren't you supposed to say "don't worry, as long as you work hard,practice your brains out and truly love music, it will all work out in the end...I know I live in an unrealistic dreamworld. but it's soo much better then the real one. I know several really wonderful people who are really good people and musicans and would make wonderful teachers, but did't make it into their schools music programs. It went to others who just don't love teaching music...they are only doing "to keep money in the bank until I make it into the biz" This isn't fair at all! I know it happens alot, but does anyone else agree that this is a huge shame? I think I will continue to live in my dream world...people get treated a lot better there...

I'd love to say it ... especially since my oldest son is attending a conservatory and attempting to become a professional clarinetist. But it's a combination of skill & luck to find any steady job playing out there. That's the reality. I live with it every day.

Amber: The music business is tough and getting a good symphony playing job is even tougher. But, if you really love music and performing and/or teaching (you'll have to do both, you know) I would'nt let fear of "cut-throats" keep me from trying as hard as possible. Being politic and trying to be understanding and friendly never really hurt anyone, I would like to believe. Now, as for the University of Texas: they have an excellent clarinet instructor who's a former Bob Marcelus student. Plays great and sort of "specializes" in chamber music. The only problem is the locale and its heat and inevitable "cedar-fever" - an allergy that affects just about every citizen after a year or two in residence.
There are many fine schools in the US and Canada. All of them would be happy to send you material and information.
If you play piano fairly well, that can be a help, too. As far as "selectivity" is concerned, I would'nt worry about that if I were you. A lot of places will welcome a warm body and do what they can to make a musician out of same!
Sure, the larger and more "prestigious" schools are quite selective, but you should give it your all, regardless. You are probably still young and have your whole life ahead of you. Making the right school choice is very important; so shop around and audition around as much as you can afford. Keep that reed wet! All the best, ET

Amber: PS....I forgot to mention North Texas State. Yes, it has a great music program, tho' a bit top-heavy in Jazz studies. As a Texan, I can say without hesitation that I'd stay out of that state, but the education possibilities there at NTU and UT and particularly at Rice in Houston are outstanding. Good luck!!!
