Just tell him you appreciated his good work, and wish him well in his new endeavour. He'll know what you mean, and he'll appreciate it forever.

In addition to Mark's suggestion, try to do your personal best and be supportive of any new director that you have. This will be a living tribute to your old director.

I know the feeling! I had to do the same thing this year too! So I wrote him a note saying how glad I was to have as a teacher and blah blah blah...you know the stuff. Anyway, a bunch of us did it and we put them in a book. There were over 200 entries!! I can tell it really meant a lot to him. I saw him reading it in his car that night! Try that...it would be a very special thing to do for a great teacher!

I like the idea of a note thanking him for all his work with you and the class. Amber's idea sounds nice too! He'd probably love to know he had a positive impact in your lives.

Okay, perhaps a bit rich, but maybe a concert just for him or her would be nice, too.

We did that when my old band director retired. We played Overture 1812 and let him conduct. The colorguard did a little bit of dancing too...it was a nice touch. We even made a video. My middle school band director was also retiring, so he was the guest of honor. We had to keep it super secret, but in the end, it was all worth it.
