 Stoky and the Philadelphia

Hi, folks,

I just came across this recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer that provides an insider's view of the waning Stokowski era and the early tenure of Ormandy. Sheds some interesting light on the turmoil that accompanied this pivotal period in the orchestra's history. http://www.philly.com/inquirer/entertainment/20070415_I_remember_Stoky.html

Stokowski was a marvelous musician. He was the one who made Philly a world class orchestra and created the magnificent "Philadelphia sound".

Before the era of the "big 5", there were the big three. Philadelphia had Stokowski, Toscanini was in New York, and Boston was led by Koussevitzky. There was some marvelous music-making going on back then - it's too bad recording technology was in its infancy.
