Age of Boston Wonder Bb metal clar?
Author: Henning

Hello,

can anybody please help me estimate the age of a Boston Wonder metal clarinet. It´s stamped PAT. PENDING, Bb, P3824 in the upper part of the body. In the bell is stamped: TRADE MARK, BOSTON WONDER, REG. U.S. PAT. OFF
What I know is, that it is one of the many Cundy Bettoney, metal clarinets made.
If it is not possible to exactly estimate the year of manufacturing, I´d be most grateful for the timespan.

best regards

My guess...early 1900s.

Cundy Bettoney made those clarinets 1907-1950. So the question still remains.

Since Harry Bettoney's US patent, 1,705,634 [more on the Silva-Bet model] issued in March 1929, and is shown on later cls, the showing on yours of "Pending" [a preliminary claim of patent "coverage"] puts it in the 1928 and earlier years, likely 1920+. A "student" model [among many], possibly "fair" Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Well, I´ve seen them rated as intemediate (most common), professional and student as well!
One ebay auction claimed it to be a 1940s instrument so I don´t know really what to believe.

But when did Bettoney make six and seven ring metal clarinets?

regards

Hi again, Henning - For more info [than you may want?], I suggest you make a Search [above on BBoard] for Boston Wonder in particular and/or metal clarinet in general. Our BB "expert", Jim Lande, has really studied the makes, markets etc and posted lists of "trade names" and pert. info on many metals. I'm not sure if Bettoney ever made a 7 ring [only] cl, , [17 keys/6 rings being the "standard"] [I have one, an early Bundy], but he did make several models "up toward the Full Boehm", 20/7 . Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
