Has anyone ever had a bad experience with these or one in paticular before?

Since most, if not all, custom mouthpieces are available on a TRIAL BASIS its hard (but never impossible) to go wrong. IF .. you like a mouthpiece you keep it. Don't like it, you send it back for credit against the "approval bill". You don't keep the mouthpiece, the bill goes away. That said, 3 things will help anybody from having the process "go wrong" on them. 1. Enlist the help of a teacher in selection amongst the mouthpieces you receive on approval
2. Be careful with the mouthpieces while you have them in YOUR care by using a mouthpiece patch and taking care not to damage them 3. Track the return shipment back for any/all mouthpieces being returned and insure the shipment from loss or damage. Trying out mouthpieces at a conference, clinic or show like ClarinetFest is easier (but your teacher or instructor, etc. may not be around to assist you in selection --- I think that many people err because of this. That is, they pick a mouthpiece that THEY like and later decide that the chosen mouthpiece really isn't what they were looking for after all). Good luck.

I should have stated my experience, which (no doubt) is not nearly as broad as others on this BBoard or the Clarinet List for that matter. I have purchased, on approval, mouthpieces from Robert Borbeck, Roger Garrett and Richard Hawkins. Nary a problem in doing so. HTH. mw

I had a problem with a Greg Smith because it was the wrong facing and I made it that way. That was my fault--not the maker's. Now, I've tried three more of his moutpieces and have fallen in love with the perfect facing for myself. What happened shouldn't have happened, so be careful!

Always try multiple mouthpieces and if possible try them in the presence of the facer. the mouthpiece facer can adjust the mouthpice for you while you try it.

Roger Garret faces mouthpieces? everyone seems to be hacking at these things.

Actually, when I recently tried Gregory Smith mouthpieces, I liked most of them. Since they are hand-made, they will vary from mouthpiece to mouthpiece. If you are thinking about getting one, you just need to try them out. Fix a reed for each one so that it is a fair competition.
