I have recently had the pleasure of using a wood extension for the Buffet R-13 E flat clarinet that Clark Fobes makes. My E-flat clarinet is an older Buffet RC and it works beautifully. The wood extension is added to the bottom to lengthen the instrument. It has a hole to the right. This extension greatly improves the pitch and smoothes out the mid and lower register of my instrument! I have used it recently to play the Ravel Piano Concerto in G and several weeks of delicate Eflat clarinet solos in the mid register for the national tour of Wicked. The sound of this register is also enhanced by the extension! I am not affiliated with Clark in any way--just had to share this information!

The extension is incredible. I just used it on Daphnis and the Firebird. It is definately a "must-have".

what does it do?
Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

It terminates the tube(for notes E,B) like other notes, that is, with an open hole below unlike regular clarinet which terminates it with a bell.
While a bell is a very good approximation,an open hole with a bell is much better solution.(means the impedance is better matched.)
I'm wondering why this is not more widely used considering that many players go a long way for seemimgly rather small improvement.
It'll make it slighly longer and heavier but it'll be well worth doing it!

This concept is very well known scientifically. It is not something new at all.
It's been around as long as any woodwind instruments with holes are around.
This concept has been used on many ethnic flute or oboe type instruments
for hundreds(if not 1000's) of years.

Like the rest of you, I can't say enough good things about thye Fobes products. the combo of the Fobes m'piece, barrel and extension is what I'm using right now on my Eefer and I have to say my sound is the best in all ranges with this setup than any other I've tried. Behn and Grabner m'pieces might be a bit better in the upper range of the horn but not the lower and I might use one of tose m'pieces on a piece chiefly in that range of the horn, something like Daphnis & Chloe.
