 After-Playing Question
Author: Super Mario
Date:   2007-04-08 18:24

After I practice, I usually meticulously go through and wipe off all my kepys with a polishing cloth. I noteiced today that the wood, especially the back of my horn, was a little spotty, oils from my hands. is it ok to rub this off with the cloth as well or does that just work it into the wood? hmm

One option for the meticulous player is to put on white cotton gloves when putting the horn away.

I would highly recommend NOT using a "polishing cloth" on a regular basis. There are chemicals/abrasives in polishing clothes that are meant to take off fine outer layers of material to expose the unoxidized metal underneath. While this process is helpful occasionally, you will find yourself without plating sooner than you would like.

Just use a 100% cotton cloth (preferably flannel) for regular wiping. You really only need to remove the layer of muck (oils from your fingers) from the keys to keep them in good looking condition longer.

As for the wood, you can use a NON-petroleum based wood oil such as 100% orange oil for both bore oiling and sprucing up the finish.

I use decommissioned t-shirts (and I'm a thrifty person) for both swabbing and polishing. They're very soft, thin and absorbent and have lost most of their linting potential in the past 10+ years. They're as good as cotton gloves.

You can always try my method - not caring about that and not doing anything about it.

well s/he apparently is meticulously and likes a nice clean looking instrument. But using a polishing cloth all the time is not recommended. Just a plain cloth (like old tshirt) to cleanup water/oil from the body after playing. And a polishing cloth from time to time to keep it nice and shiny (i like mine shiny too).

leave the white cotton gloves for marching band
