 Stuck G#/Ab Key
Author: SVClarinet09

Today I took off my throat keys to clean out all the gunk in them--to my surprise. I had alot of difficulty putting the G#/Ab key back into place. The screw would not budge at all even when i tried positioning the key so the screw could fit. The pad was taken off that key because it was completely shot and I will have to get it replaced. When I put some oil on the screw, it screwed right into the post and through to the other one and the key was in place. Then I started to test out the notes and the key started getting stuck. The spring was on right. Now I don't know what the culprit is. Anyone have a clue? (It is the right screw btw)

Loosen the screw about 1/4 turn.

Sometimes the screw (it's rather a threaded rod on the Ab key) is not 100% straight (nor is the hole), and if these "unstraightnesses" don't match, you get a binding key. Try to turn the screw 1/4 to 1/2 turn out and see if it's getting any better. (ie operate the key while you're turning out and leave it at the optimum position)

Ah thank you. I knew that the posts weren't straight when i just took the screw and passed it through the posts and noticed that it didn't match up right. What is ironic is that the screw wasn't like that before. But all that is important is that it works =]

you could also have a loose post, which has moved so that they no longer line up.
any good tech can quickly fix that situation.

the binding rod problem is very common on most instruments. it is easy to fix with a bench motor. put the rod in the chuck and take off a bit of thread with a file, so there is a slight space between the thread and the straight part of the rod. This 'last step' is left off most current production, but it helps things a lot.
